Recruitment
People may learn about the PACT study through community events, postcards, emails, flyers, or local ads.
Initial Phone Screening
A study team member calls interested individuals for a short phone screening which includes:
- Basic questions about you and your health
- A brief memory check
If basic criteria are met, the first study visit is scheduled at a nearby site.
Visit 1: Getting Started
At the first visit, study staff:
- Review the consent form and answer questions
- Check memory, thinking, and mood
- Ask participants to complete short questionnaires
Once enrolled, participants:
- Begin their first computerized brain training session
- Are asked to try one training session at home
- Provide a blood sample, if they choose
Visit 2: Learning the Training Program
At Visit 2, participants:
- Complete a training session
- Make a plan to complete the remaining initial at-home training sessions
At-Home Training and Booster Sessions
After enrollment, participants complete training at home using a computer or tablet.
- First stage: 25 initials at-home training sessions
- About 1 year later: 10 booster training sessions
- About 18 months after that: 10 more booster training sessions
In total, participants complete 45 at-home sessions spread over several years.
PACT staff will periodically contact participants to check-in on them and their progress across this time period.
3-Year Follow-Up Visit(s)
Around the third year of enrollment, participants are invited back to their closest study site.
During this visit, we:
- Repeat memory, thinking, and mood checks
- May complete more comprehensive assessments
- Offer the option to provide a blood sample
Following this visit, we may ask participants to complete an evaluation with a study physician as well as an MRI scan to learn more about their brain health.
Possible Follow-Up Beyond Year 3
The trial may be extended for further follow-up after the 3-year visit.
If the study continues, we will contact interested participants with details, as participation will be optional.
